What to eat in Catalonia

If this is your favourite part, you're in luck, foodie, because Catalonia is in a privileged position when it comes to gastronomy. The most typical dishes are usually a mixture of sea and mountain. What's more, the food is always of excellent quality. But what are the most typical dishes?

It seems to be a very common dish, but its preparation is unusual. The tomato is not sliced, but cut in half and rubbed directly onto the bread. It's delicious!

Another dish you can enjoy thanks to our great deals in Catalonia are the bikinis, a sandwich with ham and cheese. You'll find it in any bar or café, and it's usually served with chips. Coca de Recapte is a street food classic, delicious with peppers and onions.

On the Costa Brava, you can try some of the most delicious dishes of Catalan gastronomy, from the anchovies of l'Escala to the delicious suquet de peix, not forgetting to finish your meal with a good rom cremat (burnt rum).

One of the most traditional Catalan dishes is Calçots with romesco sauce, which is prepared in the winter months. Calçots are onions that are grilled and wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm and bring them to the table. They are then dipped in romesco sauce. This dish is a bit tricky to eat but a lot of fun (no plates or cutlery are used).

As for desserts, the best known is the Crema Catalana, which is similar to custard but much sweeter as it has a thin layer of toasted sugar. Also very popular is Mel i mató (honey and cheese), the mató is a kind of fresh cheese with a mild flavour that together with honey is delicious.

Especially if you visit Catalonia in autumn or winter, you will find the famous panellets, rich sweets made with a dough of almonds, egg and sugar covered with pine nuts. They are also usually accompanied by roasted chestnuts.
